Communication Tips

  • Position yourself 4 to 6 feet from the person when speaking.
  • Enunciate at a normal tempo (helps with speech-reading).
  • Repeat statements if they are not understood and try to rephrase it.
  • Avoid covering your mouth.
  • Use body language or visual clues.
  • Wait until you have eye contact before speaking.
  • Avoid being too loud. Believe it or not, over-amplified sounds can be distressing.
  • Speak clearly. Keep in mind that some words that rhyme with others can cause confusion--examples: "cake & bake", "you & who" and "now & how".
  • Be patient.
  • Make an appointment with an Avada hearing care specialist to have your hearing checked annually.
